Here are a few examples of changes in technology that have had an adverse effect on business and jobs:
- Digital photography. I’m sure you remember the businesses in shopping malls where you could drop off your film and collect the prints after you had done your shopping, I think they’re all gone. What about Kodak one of the biggest film producers in the world? In January 2012, Kodak filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
- There were always many people offering photo services around Home Affairs offices. They’re all gone now. Home Affairs now takes the pictures they need.
- The printing industry. I can now set my workshop manuals in MS Word and have 5, 10, or 15 run copies off at a copy outlet. Or, I can have 3 copies made. This has reduced the dependency on traditional printing firms. New technologies have had a big impact on the printing industry.
- Landlines provided by Telkom SA. Who would apply for a landline when moving these days?
- Think Uber.
